Packers Rumors: Ryan Grant, A.J. Hawk, Chad Clifton

Ryan Grant

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said that the “hopes” they’ll re-sign RB Ryan Grant in the coming weeks, per Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The team will allow Grant to test the free agent market but they appear to be willing to at least check in on him. Grant, 29, isn’t going to draw a ton of interest so there’s a good chance that they could get him at a minimal salary.

A.J. Hawk

You would think that Hawk’s 2012 salary $4.4 million and the poor season he put together last year would make him a logical candidate to be released, but McCarthy apparently doesn’t see it that way.

A.J.? I have no reason to think he wouldn’t be, said McCarthy”

Hawk was reportedly criticized by his teammates following the season and rookie D.J. Smith largely out-shined him in a limited amount of playing time last season. The Packers have been notoriously loyal to the players that they draft and develop but Hawk brings very little to the team’s defense in terms of overall ability. There’s a chance that he could have contract renegotiated at some point during the offseason.

Chad Clifton

McCarthy mentioned that LT Chad Clifton underwent surgery on his lower back and hip in recent weeks.

I don’t know exactly what it was. But now he said he feels great,” said McCarthy.

Recent reports have Clifton as being on the chopping block but McCarthy said that he wants to see how Clifton looks following the procedure before deciding on his future with the team. Considering that he’s 36 and has a $5.25 million salary next season, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll be retain for the upcoming season.
