Packers Officially Sign QB Matt Flynn, Place Seneca Wallace On IR

Update:

The Green Bay Packers officially announced the signing QB Matt Flynn on Tuesday.

  • The Packers also placed QB Seneca Wallace on season-ending injured reserve.

John Skelton worked out for the team on Tuesday, so there is a chance he could be added to their practice squad at some point this week.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Packers are in fact signing QB Matt Flynn.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Packers are bringing in free agent QB John Skelton for a workout.

This comes shortly after the Packers worked out former QB Matt Flynn on Monday. It appears as though the Packers still have some concerns regarding Flynn’s arm, which could explain why they already have another visit lined up with a quarterback.

Green Bay will need to figure out who their backup quarterback will be this week as they can hardly afford another injury to the position, considering that Scott Tolzien will start Sunday’s game against the Giants.

We’ll have more regarding the Packers quarterback situation as the news is available.

Packers HC Mike McCarthy told reporters on Monday that Matt Flynn‘s workout with the team went well.

  • McCarthy mentioned that Flynn “looks good,” but added that “everything else a work in progress.

Seneca Wallace could have returned to last weekend’s game if needed, but McCarthy added that he “couldn’t move.” McCarthy wouldn’t say if Wallace could be available this weekend, but added that he expects Scott Tolzien to be much better this weekend.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers are in fact bringing in QB Matt Flynn for a workout on Monday.

According to Silverstein, Flynn could be signed immediately as to provide depth beyond Week 11 starter, Scott Tolzien.

The Packers are believed to have some concerns regarding Flynn’s arm, but at this point in time their need for a quarterback could force them to bring him back. Otherwise, Green Bay will need to keep looking for another quarterback such as Graham Harrell who was with them during the preseason.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Packers plan on bringing in QB Matt Flynn for a workout at some point in the near future.

Recent reports suggested that Flynn was an option for Green Bay if they were convinced that his arm is in good shape.

Flynn went unclaimed off of waivers on Tuesday, which means he is now free to sign with a team of his choosing. There is no question that the Packers make a lot of sense for him given the time he’s spent in Mike McCarthy’s system.

Seneca Wallace figures to be the team’s starter for Week 10’s game against the Eagles with Scott Tolzien as his backup.

ESPN’s Ed Werder expects the Green Bay Packers to sign QB Matt Flynn “if convinced he’s healthy.”

  • Werder adds that Vince Young is not believed to be an option for them.

——–

Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports that the Packers are unlikely to claim QB Matt Flynn off of waivers on Tuesday, despite the recent injury to Aaron Rodgers.

  • Demovsky adds that Green Bay still has concerns regarding Flynn’s arm issues.

This coincides with a report from Ed Werder a few weeks following Flynn’s release from the Oakland Raiders. In theory, it would make sense for the Packers to bring in someone who’s familiar with their offensive scheme, but they still need to trust that he is capable of executing their gameplan.

All indications are that the Packers will not add a quarterback this week and instead promote Scott Tolzien to their active roster.
