Packers Unlikely To Franchise QB Matt Flynn

ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that the Green Bay Packers are not expected place their franchise tag on free agent QB Matt Flynn following the season.

I’m sure the Packers would love to recoup some value for developing the seventh-round pick into a pretty decent quarterback but they would be running the risk of losing an important weapon in TE Jermichael Finley. The idea is that Green Bay could place their tag on Flynn guaranteeing him a contract around $14 million next but shop him to interested teams and get some draft picks in return for him but there’s a lot of variables in this scenario and Ted Thompson isn’t know to take on that much risk.

The Packers would still receive a compensatory draft pick (possibly a fourth-round selection) if they lose Flynn during free agency. Because of this I’d expect to see the Packers use their tag on Finley and allow Flynn to walk.

We have Flynn listed as the #35 and Finley as the #9 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
