Packers Officially Restructure WR Donald Driver’s Contract

Last night, Green Bay Packers WR Donald Driver tweeted that he had come to an agreement with the team that would restructure his contract that would have paid him $4.1 million for the 2012 season.

His agent has since confirmed the deal.

We have agreed to terms with the Packers but need to review it (Wednesday) to finalize,” said Driver’s agent, via Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Driver has been a very important player in the Packers recent history, so keeping in around makes sense from that angle, despite the fact that he’s currently 37 years old. Green Bay has some exciting young talent stashed away on their practice squad, so it will be interesting to see if they’re able to prevent them from leaving for more playing time with another team, which is exactly what happened when Chastin West left for the Jaguars last season.

Donald Driver added that he and the Packers will work to keep him in Green Bay for the upcoming season.

“I’m not going anywhere. I’ve always said I want to retire a Packer. I think the organization knows that,” said Driver, via the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “So we’re going to come together and we’re going to make a decision. One, two more years and then I’m going to put the cleats on the shelf, sit back and relax in Dallas with my family.”

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver is expected to attend team OTAs this week, ESPN Milwaukee reports.

The article writer, Jason Wilde, opines that it’s a matter of “when, not if” the two sides strike a deal for a restructured contract. The Packers will practice Wednesday-Friday this week.

Driver, 37, missed the first two phases of the team’s offseason program and the first two OTA practices due to appearing on Dancing With The Stars, which he won.

He is scheduled to be paid $2.2 million in roster bonuses, including $1.5 million on the first day of training camp, along with a $200,000 workout bonus and a $2.6 million base salary. Driver is set to count $5 million against Green Bay’s salary cap.
