Panthers Add $2M In Incentives To TE Greg Olsen’s Contract

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Panthers have agreed to add $2 million in incentive to TE Greg Olsen’s contract.

  • According to Schefter, Olsen now has the ability to increase the value his deal this year up to $8.75 million.

Carolina was reportedly negotiating with Olsen’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, over the past month regarding a contract extension, but it appears as though the two parties ultimately agreed to add some incentives to his current deal for this year.

Olsen was once considering a hold out in order to secure a contract that would pay him among the top tight ends in the NFL, but he decided against holding out of training camp and reported to the team.

There was some speculation that the Panthers’ recent decision to fire GM Dave Gettleman could be related to the lack of progress towards new contracts for veteran players including Olsen. However, he later downplayed his role in the situation.

Olsen, 32, is entering the third year of a four-year, $27.75 million contract and is set to make a base salary of  $6.5 million over the course of the final two years of his deal.

In 2016, Olsen appeared in all 16 games and caught 80 passes for 1,073 yards receiving and three touchdowns for the Panthers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 tight end in the league out of 63 qualifying players.
