Panthers Officially Promote Steve Wilks To Defensive Coordinator

Update:

The Carolina Panthers announced Friday that they’ve officially promoted  Steve Wilks to defensive coordinator as expected.

Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers will promote assistant HC/secondary coach Steve Wilks to defensive coordinator replacing DC Sean McDermott, who was hired by the Bills earlier in the day.

Person adds that an official announcement from the team regarding Wilks’ promotion could come as soon as Thursday.

Adam Schefter is reporting that Panthers assistant head coach Steve Wilks is the favorite to replace DC Sean McDermott.

  • Black & Blue Review says that if something falls through with Wilks, DL coach Eric Washington would be the next internal candidate to watch for the Panthers.

The general expectation has been that Wilks is the guy to watch after it became clear that McDermott could end up being hired by the Bills.

The Redskins previously requested permission to interview Wilks for their defensive coordinator job, but it sounds like he’ll be staying in Carolina.

Wilks, 47, began his NFL coaching career with the Bears as their defensive backs coach back in 2006. He spent two years with the Chargers before following Ron Rivera to Carolina as their defensive backs coach. The Panthers promoted him to assistant head coach in 2015.
