Panthers Claim CB Ladarius Gunter Off Waivers From Packers, Waive K Harrison Butker

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Panthers have claimed CB Ladarius Gunter off of waivers from the Packers on Wednesday.

  • According to Rapoport, the Panthers waived K Harrison Butker to make room for Gunter.

Gunter, 25, signed on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Miami back in May of 2015. He was entering the final year of a three-year, $1.58 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $615,000 this season.

The Packers somewhat surprisingly cut him loose on Tuesday.

In 2016, Gunter was active for all 16 games for the Packers and recorded 54 total tackles, 12 pass defenses, and two forced fumbles. According to ProFootballFocus, he played in two snaps during Week 1.

Butker, 22, was taken in the seventh-round of this year’s NFL draft by the Panthers. He signed a four-year, $2.48 million contract with the Panthers and stands to make base salaries of $465,000 and $555,000 over the first two years of the agreement.

Carolina was reportedly fielding trade offers for Butker, but no deal ever surfaced and they were carrying two kickers on their active roster, so it makes sense for them to one loose to bolster their depth at another position.
