Peter Schrager reports that the Panthers are expected to replace Steve Wilks, who is reportedly nearing a deal to become Cardinals’ next head coach (NFLTR), as defensive coordinator with DL coach Eric Washington.

According to Schrager, the Panthers actually signed Washington to a new contract two weeks ago in anticipation that they could lose Wilks to a head-coaching job.

Washington served as the defensive line coach at Northwestern from 2004-07 before departing to become the Bears defensive assistant/assistant defensive line coach in 2008.

After three years in Chicago, Washington was hired by the Panthers’ as their defensive line coach in 2011.

Since 2012, no group of defensive linemen has produced more sacks than Carolina under Washington.

We’ll have more regarding the Panthers and Washington as the news is available.
