Panthers FS Charles Godfrey A Possible Cap Casualty?

David Newton of ESPN.com answered a few questions regarding some possible roster moves for the Panthers this offseason during Monday’s twitter mailbag.

Newton was asked whether he thought the Panthers could release FS Charles Godfrey given that he has a large cap figure and is coming off of a serious injury.

According to Newton, the Panthers may have to “strongly consider” parting ways with Godfrey based on the fact that his 2014 cap figure will be $7.1 million next season.

Godfrey, 28, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during the team’s second game of the season, so there is at least some concern about his productivity moving forward.

Carolina does have some cap space to work with this year, but they also have some key free agents to address like DE Greg Hardy, CB Captain Munnerlyn and S Mike Mitchell who filled in for Godfrey and did an admirable job.

Should the Panthers elect to part ways with Godfrey, they could free up $2.1 million in cap space. It’s also worth noting that Godfrey rated as the No. 82 safety out of 88 qualifying players in 2012.

We have Hardy, Munnerlyn and Mitchell all listed in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
