Panthers Interim GM Marty Hurney Officially Reinstated

The Carolina Panthers announced Friday that interim GM Marty Hurney has been reinstated following an investigation into claims made by his ex-wife.

According to the Panthers, the NFL informed them Friday that there was no evidence of a violation involving Hurney and the investigation is now closed.

Here’s the NFL’s statement on their investigation into the claims against Hurney:

We have conducted an investigation into the allegations against Carolina Panthers interim General Manager Marty Hurney, which included a review of available law enforcement and court records, sworn testimony in prior proceedings, and interviews of multiple persons including Mr. Hurney. We also requested an interview with Mr. Hurney’s former wife, which was declined through her attorney. Our investigation identified no evidence to support an allegation of domestic violence or similar conduct.

Here’s a statement from Hurney’s attorney, Kathleen Lucchesi:

“It’s been a very long two weeks for Marty and his family. In this digital age, it’s nearly impossible to overcome suspicion, defend yourself, and clear your name once the court of public opinion gets a hold of a false narrative. The public scrutiny can be devastating and unrelenting. In this case, it was also unnecessary. “Words cannot express how thankful Marty is for the love and unwavering support of his family. He is grateful to the NFL for conducting a thorough investigation. He is also grateful for the continued confidence and support of the Panthers organization. Marty is looking forward to getting back to the work of building a strong and successful Panthers team for the 2018 season.”

Before allegations were made by Hurney’s ex-wife, Jeanne Hurney, and he was placed on leave, Hurney was considered to be the frontrunner for the Panthers’ GM position.

Jeanne Hurney withdrew the complaint after a district judge denied the request, saying that he saw no evidence of domestic violence.

Hurney met with NFL investigator Lisa Friel was in Charlotte last week.

The Panthers have also interviewed Bills assistant college scouting director Lake Dawson, 49ers personnel executive Martin Mayhew and Texans assistant GM Jimmy Raye II for the job.

It’s likely that Carolina will want to get their GM position settled at some point in the near future, considering that we’re drawing closer to the Scouting Combine and free agency.

Hurney is currently under contract through June.

During his 13 years as the GM of the Panthers, Hurney’s teams have produced a record of 101-107 (48.55 percent), which including four playoff appearances and one trip to the Super Bowl in 2003.

We’ll have more regarding the Panthers’ GM search as the news is available.
