Panthers Plan To Start QB Derek Anderson & Sit Cam Newton

Update:

Jay Glazer reports that the Panthers are leaning towards starting QB Derek Anderson and sitting Cam Newton out of Week 1.

Carolina reportedly fears that a shot to the ribs could keep Newton out for 3-4 weeks. Glazer adds that it’s up to Newton to change their mind and show that he can protect himself.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that the Panthers are leaning towards not playing QB Cam Newton against the Buccaneers today.

Florio specially mentions that the team is unlikely to allow Newton play given the rib injury he’s dealing with.

Newton unfortunately suffered the injury during the team’s third preseason and has been limited throughout practice ever since.

Interestingly enough, backup QB Derek Anderson attended the FOX production meeting on Saturday night, according to broadcaster Ronde Barber.

If the Panthers expect Newton to play and this is just some gamesmanship of their part, they really went to great lengths to cause confusion.

We’ll have updates regarding this situation as the news is available.
