Panthers Release CB Brandon Boykin & S Ras-I Dowling, Sign Six Players

The Carolina Panthers announced that they’ve released CB Brandon Boykin, S Ras-I Dowling and WR Jenson Stoshack on Monday.

  • The Panthers also signed six players who tried out for them this past weekend including: RB Jalen Simmons, WR Miles Shuler, TE Braxton Deaver, OT Jordan Rigsbee, LB Jared Barber and CB Shaquille Richardson.

Boykin, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. He was traded to the Steelers last year for a 2016 fifth round pick after Pittsburgh sustained some injuries at cornerback.

The Panthers elected to sign him to a one-year contract back in March.

In 2015, Boykin was active for all 16 games and recorded 25 tackles, one sack, an interception, a forced fumble and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 38 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.

Dowling, 27, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2011. He lasted just over two years in New England before he was waived and later signed to the Jets’ practice squad.

The Raiders wound up taking a chance on his at the start of the 2014 season, but he was once again among the team’s final roster cuts at the start of the season.

The Panthers signed him to their practice squad back in November and elected to bring him back on a future/reserve contract at the start of the offseason.

In 2014, Dowling appeared in three games for the Raiders, but was limited to recording just a single tackle for them.
