Panthers Release DB Charles Godfrey

The Carolina Panthers have released veteran DB Charles Godfrey on Tuesday, according to his agent Doug Henrrickson.

  • Carolina signed G Chris Scott from their practice squad.

Godfrey, 28, was in the fourth year of his six-year, $28.7 million contract that included $12.4 million guaranteed. His base salary for the 2014 season was $750,000 to go along with $1.7 million in per-game roster bonuses.

According to OverTheCap.com’s calculator, the Panthers will actually lose $1,512,500 in cap space by making this move. However, they should free up around $4,100,000 in cap space for the 2015 season.

This year, Godfrey has recorded 19 tackles over the course of seven games. Pro Footbal Focus has him rated as the No. 105 cornerback out of 106 qualifying players due to poor ratings in pass coverage.
