Panthers Release Veteran Jonathan Stewart

Jourdan Rodrigue is reporting that the Panthers have released veteran RB Jonathan Stewart on Wednesday.

Stewart had been mentioned as a potential cap casualty for the Panthers this offseason now that he’s in his thirties and they’ve already begun to reshape their backfield with the selection of Christian McCaffrey.

Stewart, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2008. He was in the final year of his six-year, $37.811 million contract when he signed a two-year, $8 million deal that included $1.1 million guaranteed with the Panthers last year.

Stewart was set to make a base salary of $1.9 million for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Stewart will free up $3,718,750 of available cap space while creating $1.5 million in dead money.

In 2017, Stewart appeared in 15 games for the Panthers and rushed for 680 yards on 198 carries (3.4 YPC) to go along with eight receptions for 52 yards receiving and seven total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 51 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
