Panthers Sign RB Fozzy Whittaker, Place RB Tyler Gaffney On IR

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Panthers have signed RB Fozzy Whittaker to a contract and placed rookie RB Tyler Gaffney on season-ending injured reserve.

Gaffney unfortunately suffered a torn lateral meniscus during Saturday’s practice, so it’s not all that surprising that they added some depth for training camp.

Whittaker, 25, signed on with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Texas back in 2012. He wound up getting claimed on two separate occasions by the Chargers and Browns.

In 2013, Whittaker appeared in 14 games for the Chargers and Browns. He ran for 78 yards on 28 carries (2.82 YPC) and scored two touchdowns.

Whittaker joins a Panthers’ backfield that consists of DeAngelo WilliamsJonathan Stewart, and Kenjon Barner.
