Panthers Sign Veteran OT Willie Smith, Waive/Injured FB Devon Johnson

The Carolina Panthers announced Thursday that they’ve signed OT Willie Smith to a one-year contract and waived FB Devon Johnson with an injury designation.

Should Johnson clear waivers tomorrow, he would revert to the team’s injured reserve list.

Smith, 29, originally signed on with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina back in November of 2011. He lasted just over a year in Washington before he was waived and later claimed by the Raiders.

Smith spent another year in Oakland before he was waived with an injury settlement during the 2013 season. He later caught on with the Chargers for a few years before returning tot he Redskins in June of last year. However, Smith was unable to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason.

In 2014, Smith appeared in all 16 games for San Diego, but was limited to playing just 69, according to Pro Football Focus.
