Panthers Sign Veteran P Mike Scifres, Cut P Michael Palardy

The Carolina Panthers announced that they’ve signed veteran P Mike Scifres to a contract and waived P Michael Palardy.

Scifres will get the opportunity to compete with Swayze Waters for the Panthers’ starting job this summer.

“What I did for 13 years in San Diego I still feel that I’m capable of doing here,” Scifres said. “I still feel I can play. Going into the draft, I knew there was a possibility I would end up getting released by San Diego. This is a new chapter, and it’s about the player I can be for this team.”

“I was extremely excited when I got the call, because this was a situation that I had followed, knowing some of the players and coaches and seeing Brad (Nortman) go to Jacksonville,” Scifres said. “This was a definitely a team I wanted to play for.

Scifres, 35, is a former fifth-round pick of the Chargers back in 2003. He was in the final year of his six-year, $20 million contract that included $9 million guaranteed when he was released in the days leading up to the draft.

The move cleared $3,562,500 in available cap space for the Chargers.

In 2015, Scifres appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers, totaling 3,261 punt yards on 72 attempts (45.3 per attempt) and 15 punts downed inside the 20 yard line.
