Panthers Waive WR Charles Johnson & DE Ryan Delaire

The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they’ve waived DE Ryan Delaire with a failed physical designation and WR Charles Johnson with an injury designation after he underwent surgery on his right knee.

Johnson, 28, originally signed on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State back in 2013. The Browns later signed him off of the Packers’ practice squad before the Vikings signed him to their active roster at the start of the 2014 season.

The Panthers signed Johnson to a one-year, $2.2 million contract this past March.

In 2016, Johnson appeared in all 16 games for the Vikings and caught 20 passes for 232 yards receiving and no touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 90 receiver out of 115 qualifying players.

Delaire, 25, originally signed on with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of back in May of 2015. He lasted just a few months with the Buccaneers before he was waived coming out of the preseason and later signed to the Redskins’ practice squad.

The Panthers would later sign him to their active roster and he finished out the year in Carolina. Delaire was designated as Carolina’s player to return from injured reserve last year.

In 2016, Delaire appeared in six games for the Panthers and recorded three tackles, one sack and a pass defense.
