Patriots & Broncos Not Interested In Wes Welker, Ravens & Dolphins Could Be Options

Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report spoke to an NFL GM who mentioned that his team has “strongly considered” the possibility of signing free agent WR Wes Welker to a contract.

However, the GM admitted that “there was great concern about his concussion history.”

Freeman mentions that a player with Welker’s concussion history will have trouble finding work in the current NFL with the emphasis on serious head injuries.

One general manager told Freeman that teams with interest in Welker could be waiting for more time to elapse and more separation from the last known concussion before signing him to a contract.

Teams that are familiar with Welker’s medical history say they believe he has had “at least” six concussions and possibly as many as 10 over the course of his career, according to Freeman.

Even so, Freeman says that there are teams with interest in Welker. Although, the Patriots and Broncos are reportedly not among this group.

Instead, Freeman suggests the Ravens and Dolphins as two teams that could be good fits for the veteran receiver.

Welker has said that he’s not ready to retire from the NFL, even though the thought has crossed his mind.

“At times you’re sitting there and thinking, ‘Well maybe I should [retire].’ I think it’s just people kind of [pressuring you], but the more you think about it, and you’re away from it, I’m not ready to [retire]. I still feel good,” Welker said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich show, via CBS Boston. “I still feel like I have some really good football left in me. I’ve always said [I’ll play] until the wheels fall off.”

The Dolphins previously brought him in for a visit, but that has been the only reported interest in him this offseason.

Welker, 33, appeared in 14 games for the Broncos last year and caught 49 passes for 464 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 71 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
