Patriots Claim Panthers Sixth-Round Pick RB Tyler Gaffney Off Waivers

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots have claimed Panthers sixth-round pick RB Tyler Gaffney off of waivers.

The Panthers tried to sneak Gaffney through waivers following a season-ending injury, but the Patriots have made similar moves like this in the past.

  • Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk mentions that the Panthers could have kept Gaffney had they waited until roster cuts were due, and then placed him on injured reserve.
  • However, signing Fozzy Whittaker to a contract now forced them to make a move.

Gaffney suffered a torn lateral meniscus last week, but was was unlikely to see a lot of playing in his first year in Carolina due to their depth at running back.

He join another crowded backfield in New England.

At Stanford, Gaffney ran for 2,500 yards on 486 carries (5.1 YPC) and scored a total of 37 touchdowns over the course of four years.
