Patriots Could Be Wise To Address S Devin McCourty’s Contract Some Time Soon

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston believes it’s more a matter of “when” than “if” Patriots S Devin McCourty will have an opportunity to sign a lucrative contract extension.

Reiss writes that a “strong case” could be made for the Patriots to be proactive with McCourty and get a long-term agreement in place sooner, rather than later.

Saints S Jairus Byrd just signed a contract that will pay him $9 million annually, and Seahawks S Earl Thomas is in a great position to possibly top that contract.

With this in mind, there is a chance that the Patriots could get McCourty under contract at a more reasonable annual salary if they were to address the situation some time soon.

According to Reiss, McCourty represents “as safe an investment as there could be in a business.

McCourty, 26, is entering the final year of his five-year, $10 million contract that includeds $7.825 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $3.92 million for the 2014 season.

Last year, McCourty appeared in 15 games for the Patriots and totaled 69 tackles, one interception, two forced fumbles and a recovery. Pro Football Focus ranked McCourty as the best safety in the NFL last season.
