Patriots & Darrelle Revis Have Yet To Discuss A Contract Extension

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Patriots and CB Darrelle Revis have yet to begin the process of discussing a long-term contract extension that would keep him in New England for the foreseeable future.

Florio mentions that when the two sides finally do sit down, the starting point for a new deal is likely to be a contract that includes $20 million in the first year.

According to Florio, if the Patriots balk at paying Revis that much in the first year, there will likely be a number of teams interested in speaking to the veteran cornerback.

Florio specifically mentions that Jets, Bills, Chiefs, and Browns are all “believed” to have interest in signing Revis.

Sources have told Florio that the Patriots filing tampering charges on Jets owner Woody Johnson for his prior comments regarding Revis was an attempt to scare them away from pursuing him in the coming months.

Multiple reports have said that New England could pick up Revis’ $20 million option if talks don’t progress in the coming months, so teams may not even get the opportunity to extend him an offer.

Revis, 29, has put together an impressive first year in New England, which could result in another impressive contract for the six-time Pro Bowler.

According to OverTheCap.com, the Patriots will have until the final day of the 2014 league year to exercise his option.

In 2014, Revis recorded 47 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, a recovery and 14 pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 4 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.
