Patriots Declining DT Danny Shelton Fifth-Year Option

According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots aren’t expected to pick up DT Danny Shelton‘s fifth-year option.

Reiss adds that this doesn’t mean New England won’t try to sign him to a long-term deal when he becomes a free agent after 2018 season.

The fifth-year option will cost New England $7,154,000 million for the 2018 season.

Shelton, 24, is a former first-round pick out of Washington by the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year $11.703 million rookie contract that included a $6.771 million signing bonus and is set to earn a base salary of $2,030,955 in 2018.

The Patriots acquired Shelton and a 2018 fifth-round pick from the Browns in exchange for a third-round pick in 2019 this offseason.

In 2017, Shelton appeared in 14 games for the Browns and recorded 33 total tackles, no sacks, and one pass defense. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 35 overall interior defender out of 122 qualifying players.
