Patriots DL Vince Wilfork Has No Plans To Retire, Says He Has “A Lot Of Football Left”

Patriots veteran DL Vince Wilfork mentioned during an appearance on the “Dale and Holley Show” that there’s “no way in the world this is my last season.”

“The way I feel, there’s no way in the world this is my last season,” Wilfork said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.

This comes just a say after Jason Cole reported there’s a feeling that this could be the right time for Wilfork to call it a career and retire from the NFL.

Sources told Cole that Wilfork’s $8.9 million cap figure will likely be too expensive for the Patriots, which means he could be on the chopping block in the coming weeks.

However, it sounds like Wilfork is set on trying to chance another

I’ve worked too hard to get back to this level. My body feels good. … The things I’ve done in my career, the way I’m headed, I still have a lot of football left in me. That’s how I feel. If I don’t feel like that, then I’d say, ‘You know what? Maybe it’s a chance to walk away.’

It might be easier for somebody like myself that has two Super Bowl rings, that came back off injury, to say ‘I’m good. I started my career with a Super Bowl win and I ended with a Super Bowl win.’ I could call it quits and it’s easier for people to say that. But I’m not saying that.

“I’m already looking forward to next year to see if we can do it again. That’s what my mind[set] is.”

Wilfork, 33, still has another two years remaining on his three-year, $22.5 million contract. He stands to make a base salary of $3 million to go along with a roster bonus of $4.5 million that’s due in March.

Last year, Wilfork requested his release from the team, but later worked out an agreement that would keep him in New England.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Wilfork would free up $8,066,666 in cap space for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Wilfork recorded 47 tackles, one interception and two pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 13 defensive end in a 3-4 system this past year, which is a pretty respectable rating.

  1. Unfortunately Vince it won’t be with the Pats due to your 8 mil cap hit. The only way is if you restructure otherwise you will have the same fate as Mankins watching the SB on TV.
