Patriots Plan To Have Julian Edelman As Backup QB For Thursday’s Game

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are, in fact, planning to have WR Julian Edelman serve as their backup quarterback for Thursday’s game against the Texans.

This comes after the news that the Patriots have Jimmy Garoppolo listed as doubtful for Week 3.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Patriots “have done extensive preparation” this week to get WR Julian Edelman prepared to be their backup quarterback for Week 3’s game against the Texans.

The Patriots brought in T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree for workouts on Tuesday, but didn’t sign either to contracts, which appeared to be an indication that they felt comfortable with Jimmy Garoppolo backing up Jacoby Brissett.

While that’s still an option, it appears as though the Patriots would prefer to roll the dice on a short week and see if they can make it through this week with just Brissett under center.

If New England can get through this week, it’s possible Garoppolo will be healthy enough to play in Week 4, which is the last game they will be without Tom Brady.

It’s worth mentioning that Edelman played quarterback in college at Kent State before converting to wide receiver in the NFL.

We’ll have more regarding the Patriots’ plans at quarterback for this week as the news is available.
