The Patriots are used to having the largest committee of running backs of any team in the league so it’s nearly impossible to determine what running back will get the most carries. Recently, the team has Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvis-Green-Ellis and Laurence Maroney in their backfield and have featured all of them this preseason to some extent.
The interesting things is that Maroney has only been given eight total carries this preseason while the other backs have been featured much more. It seemed as though the team was going to give Maroney his share of carries last night against the Rams but he never even got on the field.
Bill Belichick responded to questions from the media regarding this situation by saying “We never had the ball. We didn’t have any plays to run on offense.”
Whether that truly the case or not we’ll probably never know but it’s safe to suggest that Maroney will not be the Patriots featured back like many had thought until something changes.
