Patriots FS Devin McCourty A “Prime Candidate” For A Contract Extension

ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss mentioned over the weekend that Patriots FS Devin McCourty is a “prime candidate” for an early contract extension this offseason.

McCourty, 26, has just one year remaining on his rookie contract and will make just $920,000 for the 2014 season, despite being the Patriots best defensive back. In fact, Pro Football Focus has McCourty rated as the No. 1 overall safety in league this season by a decent margin.

As things stand right now, New England doesn’t have a ton of cap space to work with and they will also need to make some decisions regarding free agents-to-be CB Aqib Talib, ILB Brandon Spikes, WR Julian Edelman and RB LeGarrette Blount.

If McCourty is willing to offer them a discount on a long-term deal it could be worth considering given that he will almost certainly be a highly sought after free agent a year from now.
