Patriots Have Spoken With BenJarvus Green-Ellis About An Extension

During Joel Segal‘s appearance on Pro Football Talk Live, he mentioned that he has already spoken with the New England Patriots about a contract extension for for RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

While nothing appears to be imminent, Segal seemed optimistic about the team’s interest in his client.

Green-Ellis has gone from undrafted free agent to the team’s leading rusher in recent years and has amazingly never fumbled in his entire NFL career. That has to be one of the best marketing stat’s ever for an unrestricted free agent running back.

The problem for the Patriots is that they have two young running backs in Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen who they drafted last year. I’m sure that they would love to keep Green-Ellis but they previous investment in the two rookies along with Danny Woodhead could make it impossible for them to re-sign him at a comparable price tag to what he could get on the open market.

PFT’s Gregg Rosenthal speculates that the Kansas City Chiefs could really use someone like Green-Ellis and the fact that Scott Pioli worked in New England could increase their pursuit of the “Law Firm.”
