ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New England Patriots have signed TE Aaron Hernandez to a contract extension that will keep him under team control through 2018 season.

Rob Gronkowski recently signed a six-year deal worth $54 million, which has him under contract through the 2019 season. There’s no question that the two tight ends are a huge component of the Patriots offense, so it really makes a lot of sense to see them address their contracts. Hernandez appears to be in line for a huge 2012 season, so locking him up know versus waiting until he puts together another amazing season, makes a lot of sense.
