Patriots A Potential Landing Spot For Chip Kelly?

Chris Mortensen of ESPN mentions that the Patriots could end up being a logical landing spot for former Eagles and 49ers HC Chip Kelly.

Mortensen points out that Kelly and Patriots HC Bill Belichick are friends and have exchanged football concepts since Kelly’s time at Oregon.

Kelly interviewed for the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator position earlier in the week before they decided to go in a different direction. Mortensen says that Tom Coughlin actually urged HC Doug Marrone to explore adding Kelly to the staff as an offensive coordinator or in another capacity, but they ultimately decided to promote Nathaniel Hackett to the offensive coordinator.

A league source tells Mortensen that Kelly was actually headed to New England to meet with Belichick when the made a decision to go with Hackett.

A number of reports have said that Kelly would prefer to remain in the NFL as opposed to heading back to the college game, and all indications are that this is his current focus.

Jay Glazer previously mentioned Kelly “just wants to be a football guy” and plans to pursue offensive coordinator jobs this offseason.

“Chip told me last night, ‘I’ll go be an offensive coordinator somewhere,” Glazer said.

Kelly, 53, was hired by the Eagles back in 2013 as their head coach. He lasted just under three years in Philadelphia before he was fired during the 2015 season. The 49ers hired him as their head coach soon after.

Since taking the Eagles’ head-coaching job back in 2013, Kelly has produced a record of 28-35 (44.4 percent) as an NFL head coach for Philadelphia and San Francisco including one playoff appearance while he was with the Eagles.

We’ll have more regarding where Kelly could end up as the news is available.
