Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported this morning that Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett is still dealing with a thumb issue and could undergo surgery on it once Tom Brady returns from his suspension next week.
It’s at least a possibility that New England could place Brissett on injured reserve at some point to create a roster spot. Brady will obviously take over the starting job, which would buy Jimmy Garoppolo some extra time to get healthy so they wouldn’t need to carry three quarterbacks on their active roster.
The Patriots elected to start Brissett, as Garoppolo still isn’t healthy enough to play today.
Brissett, 22, was taken in the third round of this year’s NFL draft by the Patriots. He’s in the first year of his four-year, $3.411 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $450,000 for the 2016 season.
Entering today’s game, Brissett had thrown for 195 yards while completing 60.7 percent of his passes to go along with 60 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground over the course of two games.
