Patriots Release Three Players Including CB Derek Cox

The New England Patriots announced Saturday that they have released DB Derek Cox, DB Justin Green and LB DJ Lynch.

Cox, 28, was a free agent bust signing made by the Chargers a few years ago when they gave him a four-year contract worth $20 million that included $10.25 million guaranteed. Even with that kind of contract, Cox was was released after one season.

He signed on with the Ravens back in August of last year, but was among their final roster cuts.

New England signed him to a contract a few months ago, but it appears as though they prefer their other options at cornerback.

In 2013,  Cox appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers, but totaled just 38 tackles and an interception. Pro Football Focus rated Cox as the No. 104 cornerback in the league out of 110 qualifying players last year.

Green, 24, originally signed with the Patriots as a n undrafted free agent out of Illinois back July of 2013. Last year, Green was with the Patriots last year, but wound up being traded to the Cowboys in return for DE Ben Bass.

However, Green was among the team’s final roster cuts at the start of the 2014 season.

The Pats signed him to their practice squad back in December of last year.
