The agent for Patriots S Steve Gregory, David Canter, announced via his Twitter account that the team is releasing his client Friday.
Gregory was in the final year of his contract and had a base salary of $2.25 million for the 2014 season. He counted $3,683,334 against the team’s 2014 salary cap, according to OverTheCap.com. However, releasing Gregory will free up $2.85 million in cap space for the Pats.
Gregory, 31, appeared in 14 games for the Patriots last season and totaled 79 tackles, one sack and a pass defensed. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 25 safety in the league last season.
