Patriots Reportedly Approach NT Vince Wilfork Regarding A Restructured Contract

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, citing sources familiar with the talks, reports that the Patriots have approached NT Vince Wilfork about restructuring his contract.

Reiss mentions that there is at least a chance that the Patriots could consider releasing Wilfork, depending on his willingness to rework his contract in a way that would offer the team some cap relief.

Wilfork, 32, is coming off of an Achilles’ injury and is entering the final year of his five-year, $40 million contract that included $25 million guaranteed. His cap figure for the 2014 season sits at $11.6 million and New England would free up $8 million in cap space by releasing, according to OverTheCap.com.

The idea of an extension has been floated in recent months, and Reiss also believes that this could be an option for the Patriots to consider.

As things stand right now, the Patriots are projected to have over $12 million in available cap space, but a new contract for Wilfork could offer them a sizable increase that could go a long way towards keeping free agents like WR Julian Edelman and CB Aqib Talib.
