Patriots S Devin McCourty Returning For 2019 Season

Patriots S Devin McCourty announced during an appearance on the Sports Spectrum Podcast that will be returning for the 2019 season.

“I’m gonna play,” McCourty said, via the Boston Herald.

During Super Bowl week, McCourty mentioned that he was undecided about returning for the 2019 season, implying retirement could be a possibility.

That was Super Bowl Media Night when Deion (Sanders) said that to me, and it was like, ‘Yeah, man, if we win the Super Bowl I don’t know what else could top that,‘” McCourty explained. “And I think in that moment I kind of forgot that I don’t play this game just to win Super Bowls. There’s so much more than comes from me playing the game that I love. I think once you get a chance to step away for a couple weeks you’re like, ‘Yeah, man, I still do want to be around these young guys that come in.’”

“Being down here (with Sports Spectrum) this week, and next week going to do a football camp in Puerto Rico with the family, it really starts to make you realize the platform that you get to use to do some special things.”

McCourty, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Patriots back in 2010. He’s currently in the fourth year of his five-year, $47.5 million contract that includes $28.5 million guaranteed. McCourty stands to make a base salary of and $9 million for the 2019 season.

In 2018, McCourty appeared in all 16 games for the Patriots and recorded 82 tackles, one interception, a defensive touchdown, a forced fumble, two recoveries and four pass defenses.
