Patriots Sign DE Rob Ninkovich To One-Year Extension

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that Patriots signed DE Rob Ninkovich to a one-year extension through the 2017 season.

According to Volin, Ninkovich received a $1.5 million signing bonus, which lowered his 2016 base salary from $1.5 million to $1 million and saved him about $117,000 in suspension fines.

In 2017, Ninkovich has a $1 million salary, which is guaranteed for injury only to go along with, $400,000 in per-game bonuses, $100,000 in workout bonuses, and $500,000 in incentives.

Ninkovich’s contract carries a max value of $2 million, according to Volin.

Ninkovich suffered a torn triceps injury a month ago and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. However, he was later suspended four games for testing positive for a banned substance.

Ninkovich, 32, was in the final year of his four-year, $15.04 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus. He was set to make a base salary of $1.5 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Ninkovich appeared in all 16 games for the Patriots and recorded 52 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a recovery and six pass defenses.
