Patriots Not Guaranteeing RB Joseph Addai A Roster Spot

ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss writes that despite being signed by the Patriots yesterday, Joseph Addai is by no means a lock to make the Patriots’ roster this season.

New England tends to go with a committee approach to their backfield, so it was surprising to them grab a cheap veteran running back, but Reiss mentions that they could elect to carry more players at positions other than running back this season.

While that’s certainly a possibility, it would be surprising to see them move forward with just Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley, and Shane Vereen. Addai could be a third-down, passing compliment much like Sammy Morris was for them in the past. Ridley and Vereen figure to get majority of the team’s early down looks.

Mike Chappell tweets that the New England Patriots have signed RB Joseph Addai.

The Patriots recently brought in a number of veteran running backs including Addai, Ryan Grant and Tim Hightower. Addai joins a backfield that consists of Danny Woodhead, Steven Ridley and Shane Vereen, so it will be interesting to see what role ends up playing next season. In the last few years, Addai has been used as a third-down back, the in passing game, but he comes with plenty of mileage and some injury concerns.
