ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates are reporting that the Patriots have signed veteran LB Brandon Spikes to a one-year contract.

There was talk that Spikes could return to New England after spending a year in Buffalo. In fact, the Patriots hosted him and Dane Fletcher for visits in recent weeks.

The Patriots defense has undergone some serious changes this offseason, but it appears as though their focus is to get strong in their front seven to take some pressure off of their secondary.

Spikes, 27, was forced to sign a one-year, $3 million contract with the Bills last year after finding very limited interest on the open market.

In 2014, he appeared in all 16 games and recorded 54 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and three pass defines. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 13 inside linebacker out of 60 qualifying players due in large part to a very solid rating as a run-defender.

We had Spikes listed as the No. 49 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
