Patriots Signing WR Griff Whalen

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Patriots are signing WR Griff Whalen to a contract on Thursday. According to Rapoport, the Patriots think Whalen can fill Danny Amendola’s role until the playoffs.

Whalen was among three receivers who tried out for the team on Thursday.

Whalen, 26, signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2012. He spent his enter career in Indianapolis before he was placed on injured reserve and later waived from the list back in January.

The Dolphins later signed him to a contract this past March only to cut him loose at the start of the season. Whalen caught on with the Chargers a few weeks later. San Diego cut Whalen loose last week to make room fro RB Ronnie Hillman, who was claimed off of waivers.

In 2016, Whalen has appeared in eight games and caught two passes for 22 yards receiving and no touchdowns for the Chargers.
