It’s official. Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots have franchised WR Wes Welker.
Welker will make $9.4 million for the 2012 season, all of which is guaranteed but the two sides will most likely try to get a deal done in the coming months.
Welker was the obvious choice for the team’s tag, so this news comes as no real surprise. One upshot of this salary commitment to Welker could be that the Patriots are less likely to make another major signing at WR this offseason. The Patriots have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for top free agent WR Mike Wallace, who may now be a bit too expensive. The signing does not, however, necessarily rule them out of the running on Brandon Lloyd, who is a bit older and might take a discount to re-join Josh McDaniels.
