Patriots WR Brandon Lloyd A Cap-Casualty?

ESPN’s Mike Reiss writes that he’s “not sure it’s a slam dunk” that WR Brandon Lloyd will be back with the Patriots next season.

Although Lloyd caught 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns this year, Reiss points to his 2013 salary as the main reason why New England could look to move on without him next season.

Lloyd has a $3 million bonus to go along with $1.9 million base salary next season, which amounts to a$4.5 million cap charge, according to Reiss.

Lloyd will be 32 at the start of the 2013 season and there’s already been some talk that the Patriots could look to get younger at receiver next year. On top of that, it’s hard to say for certain that he’ll remain as effective as he’s been in recent years.

Pro Football Focus rated Lloyd as the No. 14 best receiver in the league this season, but the Patriots were hoping that he would provide the deep threat that they’ve been without since they parted ways with Randy Moss and that really wasn’t the case this season.
