“Pessimism” That Seahawks & Russell Wilson Get Extension In Place Before Deadline

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that while the Seahawks and QB Russell Wilson continue to discuss a long-term extension in the days leading up to Wilson’s self imposed deadline, there is some pessimism that a deal gets done.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned on Wednesday that the Seahawks’ $21 million per year offer to Wilson isn’t the total value of the agreement, but includes his $1.5 million salary under his rookie agreement.

According to Florio, if the Seahawks are offering Wilson $21 million annually over the course of four years, the total value of the deal would be $85.5 million over five years or an average salary of $17.1 million.

Assuming these figures are accurate, they appear to be well off of the kind of contract Wilson is reportedly seeking. Previous reports have said that he would like to secure a deal that would make him the highest paid player in NFL history, and include over $60 million guaranteed.

Should the deadline pass without a deal, it would not be surprising to see Seattle turn their attention to locking up MLB Bobby Wagnerand then use their franchise tag on Wilson in 2016.

Wilson, 26, still has one year remaining on his four-year, $2.198 million rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $798,651 for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Wilson threw for 3,475 yards while completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 849 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns over the course of 16 games.

We’ll have more regarding Wilson and a potential contract extension as the news is available.
