Possibility That The Vikings Could Cut TE John Carlson

Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier doesn’t think that tight end John Carlson‘s career is in jeopardy following a concussion he suffered — the fourth of his career — that he suffered in Sunday’s win over the Cardinals, per Tom Peliserro of ESPN 1500 Twin Cities.

“Not at this point,” Frazier said, via Peliserro. “None of the doctors have indicated to me that it’s something we have to be concerned about long-term. There will be a lot more discussions, because he hasn’t been cleared yet, but at this point, no, not a concern about his long-term future.”

While Carlson’s career may not be over, there is the possibility for the Vikings to cut the tight end due to his lack of performance this season after he collects $7.9 million in guarantees this season. The Vikings would have to pay him another $1.2 million if he is on their roster at the start of the 2013 season. Carlson is set to make base salaries of $3.9 million in 2014 and $4.9 million for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Carlson only has three catches for eight yards in seven games played so far this season. Fourth round pick Rhett Ellison could make Carlson expendable as the season moves forward.
