“Very Possible” Derek Carr Could Get $25M Per Year From Raiders

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Raiders and QB Derek Carr have continued negotiations regarding a long-term extension in recent weeks and have been trying to get an agreement in place before the start of the training camp.

According to Rapoport, it’s “very possible” Carr could end up being the first NFL player to make $25 million per year as part of a long-term deal when all is said and done.

One interesting note from Rapoport is related to the timing of a potential deal between the Raiders and Carr as it’s possible Kirk Cousins could reset the quarterback market before the July 15 deadline to negotiate with franchise players.

A few weeks ago, Carr reiterated that he views training camp as a deadline to negotiate a long-term extension with the team.

“There’s nothing new to report right now. I’m hoping that those things will pick up here real soon, which we’re expecting anyway,” Carr told reporters Tuesday, via NFL.com. “They’ve been talking to Tim, my agent, and things like that. But that should get going real soon, I would hope, because once training camp hits, I’m all football. I’m not going to distract my teammates and you guys are going to want to know and things like that.

“Trust me, if it’s not done by training camp, we won’t be talking about it.”

Carr did, however, say that he isn’t worried about the contract talks and is “very confident” it will get done.

I’m very confident. Again I’m not worried,” Carr said. “I know how they feel, they know how I feel. It’s just a matter of them sitting down and getting after it. I’m not worried at all. At the same time, things happen. If it got to that, I’m just focused on football.

Carr is positioned well to come close to or even surpass Andrew Luck‘s record six-year, $139.125 million contract with $87 million guaranteed, as Rapoport mentioned.

Carr, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Raiders back in 2014. He is currently in the final year of his four-year, $5,371,802 contract and stands to make a base salary of $977,519 for the 2017 season.

The Raiders could, of course, use their franchise tag on him next year if they fail to reach an agreement in the coming months.

In 2016, Carr had thrown for 3,933yards while completing 63.7 percent of his passes to go along with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding a long-term extension for Carr as the news is available.
