Raiders DE Mario Edwards Jr. May Open Season On PUP List

Raiders HC Jack Del Rio tells Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle that DE Mario Edwards (hip) could open the season on the reserve/PUP list.

This would cost him the first six games of the 2016 season.

Edwards suffered a strained hip during the team’s preseason opener and was expected to miss between 4-6 weeks. However, it sounds like he may not be as close to 100 percent healthy as they were hoping.

It is worth mentioning that Edwards suffered a serious neck injury last season that was thought to be potentially career threatening.

Edwards, 22, was taken in the second-round of the 2015 NFL draft. He is entering the second year of his four-year, $6.017 million rookie contract that included $4.161 million guaranteed.

He’ll make a base salary of $708,508 this season to go along with another $982,016 in 2017.

In 2015, Edwards appeared in 14 games and recorded 41 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass defenses for the Raiders. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 32 edge defender out of 110 qualifying players.
