Raiders Expected To Designate Rookie S Obi Melifonwu For Return From I.R.

According to Ian Rapoport, Raiders second-round S Obi Melifonwu is expected to be brought back from injured reserve after Week 8, which means he’s a candidate to be designated to return.

Melifonwu was a somewhat surprising addition to the team’s injured reserve list last weekend. He’s working his way back from knee surgery, but it sounds like there’s a good chance he’ll still contribute to the Raiders’ defense in 2017.

Melifonwu, 23, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. According to OverTheCap.com, Melifonwu will receive a four-year contract worth $4,509,376, which includes a signing bonus of $1,419,544.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut,  Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.

We’ll have more regarding Melifonwu’s return as the news is available.
