Raiders Starting Rookie QB Connor Cook Against Texans

Raiders HC Jack Del Rio announced Wednesday that they’re starting rookie QB Connor Cook against the Texans for their Wildcard game.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Raiders are moving forward with the expectation that rookie Connor Cook starts at quarterback for them in their Wildcard game against the Texans.

• Sources tell Rapoport that Matt McGloin is not believed to be ready to play this weekend.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering that a recent report mentioned that Oakland was not optimistic about McGloin playing in their playoff game.

The Raiders listed McGloin’s injury as a shoulder issue but he specifically has an injury is to his trapezius that’s acting like a pinched nerve, according to Rapoport.

Oakland are reportedly signing Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad and could promote him to their active roster for this weekend’s game if McGloin can’t go.

Cook, 23, was taken by the Raiders in the fourth round of last year’s NFL Draft. He’s currently in the first year of his four-year, $2.959 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $540,000 and $630,000 over the next two years.

In 2016, Cook has appeared in one game and thrown for 150 yards while completing 14 of 21 passing attempts to go along with one touchdown and one interception.

McGloin, 26, wound up signing on with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State back in 2013. He surprisingly has managed to make the 53-man roster each year and signed a one-year, $2.553 million contract with the Raiders as a restricted free agent this past April

This season, McGloin has completed two of four passing attempts for 29 yards passing and no touchdowns or interceptions.
