Eagles Interested In QB Christian Ponder

Update:

Rand Getlin, citing multiple sources, reports that the Eagles have interest Raiders QB Christian Ponder.

  • Ian Rapoport adds that if the Eagles are to bring in Ponder, it will be as a free agent.
  • The Raiders are reportedly prepared to cut Ponder loose, according to Rapoport.

This comes after the Eagles released QB Tim Tebow to get down to the roster limited on Saturday. Interestingly enough, Philadelphia cut their squad down to 52 players, so they do have a roster spot available.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, citing a source informed of the Raiders’ plans, reports that Oakland will either release or trade QB Christian Ponder at some point Saturday.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the Raiders are expected to release former first-round QB Christian Ponder by tomorrow’s deadline.

  • According to Caplan, the Raiders will absorb $1.5m dead money from Ponder’s signing bonus.

This could mean that the Raiders will be in the market for a backup quarterback or they could move forward with Matt McGloin as Derek Carr‘s backup.

Ponder, 27, hasn’t come anywhere the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011.

The Raiders signed him to a one-year, $2.25 million contract that included a $1.5 million signing bonus back in March.

Last year, Ponder appeared in just two games and threw for 222 yards while completing 50 percent of his passes to go along with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
