Raiders First-Round CB Gareon Conley Still Under Investigation

Raiders first-round CB Gareon Conley is still being investigated in connection to the rape accusation that surfaced just days before this year’s draft, according to Michael Gehlken of the Review Journal.

Detectives have had meetings with the prosecutor’s office,” a public information officer for the Cleveland Division of Police, Jennifer Ciaccia, tells Gehlken. “They would still classify it as being under investigation. No official charges have been filed. … They haven’t ruled it closed. The official statement is it still remains under investigation.”

Gehlken adds that Ciaccia declined to provide a timetable for when this matter could be resolved.

The Raiders used their first-round pick on Conley with the expectation that this case would be resolved by now. However, it appears as though Conley won’t be ready to join the team this week for the start of training camp.

As of now, Conley is one of just four draft picks who have yet to sign their rookie contract along with second-round S Obi Melifonwu.

Conley, 21, was selected with the No. 21 overall pick by the Raiders in this year’s NFL draft. Conley was considered to be one of the top cornerbacks in this year’s draft class with an opportunity to be the first player at his position to come off the board.

However, reports surfaced that he was facing rape allegations just a few days before the draft, which led to questions as to whether he would even be drafted. The Raiders explained that they’ve done extensive work on the matter and believe Conley to be innocent.

According to OverTheCap.com, Conley will receive a four-year contract worth $10,467,662, which includes a signing bonus of $5,752,844. The contract also has a fifth-year option for the team to consider in 2020.

During his college career at Ohio State, Conley recorded 91 tackles, a half sack, six interceptions, and 15 pass defenses over the course of 35 games.
