Raiders Officially Sign QB Christian Ponder To A One-Year Deal

Update:

The Oakland Raiders announced that they’ve officially signed former Vikings QB Christian Ponder.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the Raiders are expected to sign QB Christian Ponder to a one-year contract.

———-

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that former Vikings QB Christian Ponder visiting the Raiders on Friday.

This is the first reported interest for Ponder since free agency opened earlier in the week, which is just another indication that we’re in the second wave of free agency.

The Raiders clearly aren’t looking to add someone to compete with Derek Carr for the starting job, but this could be an indication that the Raiders are prepared to release veteran QB Matt Schaub at some point in time.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Schaub will free up $5.5 million in available cap space while creating no dead money for the Raiders.

Ponder, 27, hasn’t come anywhere the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011.

Last year, Ponder appeared in just two games and threw for 222 yards while completing 50 percent of his passes to go along with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
